Fidchell (meaning "wood knowledge") is an ancient Celtic board game, deeply rooted in the history of the Irish and Welsh alike. Also known as "Gwyddbwyll" and "Faerie Chess", the layout and premise of the game is linked to Celtic symbolism, mythology, and even the ancient Celtic calendar. The game itself is intensely challenging despite its simple premise, and has a high potential of repeated and variable play. • OBJECT OF THE GAME: Fidchell is a 2-player game, played on a polar grid with variable numbers of positions on each circumference. Each player starts with 27 stones, with 8 placed at specific starting positions and 19 held offboard. There are two game phases; placement and then movement. The two players have asymmetric goals - white must build a continuous line of pieces from center to outer circumference, and black must prevent this from happening. A rules pamphlet with two challenging variants is included with the game.
